Museum Documentation, Principles and Practice: Dealing with Digitisation
Indian Institute of Heritage, New Delhi

ICOM Documentation Training, India 2026 is an intensive, week‑long training programme designed for museum and heritage professionals across India and the wider region. Delivered by CIDOC Training on behalf of ICOM Documentation and hosted by the Indian Institute of Heritage, the course brings together international best practice, practical methods, and hands‑on exercises to build confidence in planning and implementing documentation and digitisation projects.
Across nine three‑hour sessions, participants explore the foundations of museum documentation, the role of standards, the realities of digitisation, and the organisational changes required to build a digitally confident museum culture. The programme is designed for professionals who already work with collections but may not have had formal training — offering a structured, supportive environment to consolidate existing knowledge and develop new skills.

Topics include

  • Why documentation matters and how it supports accountability, care, and public trust
  • Applying the Documentation Guidelines and controlled vocabularies in day‑to‑day work
  • Designing clear, sustainable documentation workflows
  • Practical imaging methods and digital asset management
  • Planning achievable digitisation projects
  • Choosing and implementing a Collections Management System
  • Understanding the Object ID standard and the role of museums in preventing illicit trafficking
  • Documenting Intangible Cultural Heritage
  • Building institutional capacity and planning for long‑term improvement

Behind‑the‑Scenes Study Visit

The programme includes a guided visit to a working museum documentation service. Participants observe real‑world workflows, see how documentation teams manage day‑to‑day challenges, and discuss practical issues “at the coal‑face” with professionals responsible for collections data, imaging, and systems. This visit grounds the week’s learning in lived practice and offers a rare opportunity to see documentation work in action.
